You can see Ephesus's highlights in as little as 2 hours or fill an entire day with the ancient city, nearby museums, and a hillside wine village. Below are two tested itineraries: a tight 5-hour plan for cruise passengers and a full-day plan for independent travelers with more time.
5-Hour Cruise Ship Itinerary
This itinerary is designed for a typical cruise port call. You'll see all the major monuments, including the Terrace Houses, and return to the ship with time to spare.
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Walk off ship, taxi to Upper Gate (20 min) |
| 08:30 | Enter Ephesus at Upper Gate (EUR 40 + EUR 15 Terrace Houses) |
| 08:30-10:30 | Walk downhill through the ruins (details below) |
| 10:30-11:00 | Ephesus Experience Museum at Lower Gate (included in ticket) |
| 11:00 | Taxi pickup at Lower Gate, return to port (20 min) |
| 11:30 | Back at ship with 30+ min buffer |
The Walking Route (Upper to Lower Gate)
Enter at the Upper Gate and follow the downhill path — 1.5-2.4 km through the heart of the ancient city. Every guide recommends this direction. Here's what you'll see, in order:
- Odeon — A 1,400-seat roofed concert hall with marble benches featuring lion's-paw legs. Less crowded than later stops, good for early photos.
- Curetes Street — The main marble-paved avenue, 210 meters of polished stone. Watch your footing — it's genuinely slippery.
- Temple of Hadrian — An elegant facade with a relief bust of Tyche (goddess of fortune) in the arch and Medusa above the inner doorway. The visible panels are copies; originals are in the museum.
- Terrace Houses — Seven luxury Roman homes on three terraces, with floor mosaics, wall frescoes, ancient graffiti, and sophisticated underfloor heating. One of the few shaded areas at the site. Allow 30-45 minutes.
- Library of Celsus — The iconic two-story facade, 17 meters high. Once the third-largest library in the ancient world with 12,000 scrolls. Best photographed in morning light (the facade faces east).
- Great Theatre area — The 25,000-seat theatre where the biblical silversmiths' riot against Paul took place. Note: the interior seating area has been closed for restoration since April 2025. You can view the exterior from the Commercial Agora.
Finish at the Ephesus Experience Museum near the Lower Gate. It's included in your EUR 40 ticket, it's air-conditioned, and it covers 8,000 years of Ephesus history — a welcome cool-down after the open-air ruins.
Full-Day Independent Itinerary
If you're staying in Selcuk or have a long port call (7+ hours), this itinerary lets you experience Ephesus and the surrounding area at a relaxed pace.
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 08:00 | Arrive at Upper Gate |
| 08:00-11:00 | Tour Ephesus + Terrace Houses (2.5-3 hours) |
| 11:00-11:30 | Experience Museum at Lower Gate |
| 11:30-12:30 | Lunch in Selcuk (pide, kebabs, gozleme — EUR 8-15/person) |
| 12:30-13:30 | Basilica of St. John (EUR 6) + Isa Bey Mosque (free) |
| 13:30-14:15 | Ephesus Archaeological Museum (EUR 10, air-conditioned) |
| 14:30-16:30 | Optional: Sirince village for wine tasting (15 min by dolmus) |
Basilica of St. John on Ayasuluk Hill is the believed burial site of St. John the Apostle, built by Emperor Justinian I. Highlights include St. John's rebuilt tomb, 10th-century frescoes, and panoramic views from the upper terrace. Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Isa Bey Mosque (1375) is a beautiful Seljuk-era mosque built with marble recycled from the Temple of Artemis. Free entry — cover shoulders and knees.
The Archaeological Museum houses over 50,000 artifacts, including two famous colossal Artemis statues and the original friezes from the Temple of Hadrian. The 10-minute 3D simulation of ancient Ephesus is worth catching. Air-conditioned — good for the midday heat.
Sirince Village is an optional but rewarding addition. See our Sirince village guide for details.
How Long Does a Visit Take?
| Visit Type | Duration | What You'll See |
|---|---|---|
| Speed visit | 45 min-1 hour | Main highlights only |
| Quick highlights | 1-1.5 hours | Main street, Library, Theatre |
| Standard visit | 2-3 hours | All major monuments, photos |
| Thorough (+ Terrace Houses) | 3-5 hours | Everything above + Terrace Houses |

Most cruise passengers spend 2-3 hours at the ruins. Adding the Terrace Houses (highly recommended) adds 30-45 minutes.
Photography Tips by Stop
Morning (08:00-10:00) is the best time for most photography:
- Library of Celsus: East-facing facade catches morning light perfectly. This is THE iconic Ephesus shot — arrive early before crowds fill the frame.
- Curetes Street: Morning sidelight creates dramatic shadows across the columns and marble surface.
- Temple of Hadrian: Richly decorated facade works well in any light, but morning avoids harsh overhead shadows on the relief details.
Late afternoon (after 15:30) brings warm, golden light:
- Great Theatre: Best photographed from Harbour Street looking back, using a wide-angle lens. Afternoon light is warm and dramatic.
- Odeon: Fewer crowds in the afternoon for cleaner compositions.
Midday tip: The white marble is extremely bright under direct sun. Use exposure compensation (-0.5 to -1 stop) to avoid blown highlights.
No drones or tripods are permitted at the site.
Practical Tips for Your Day
Tickets: Entry is EUR 40 (includes Experience Museum). Terrace Houses are EUR 15 extra. Euro cash is not accepted — pay in Turkish Lira cash or by credit card. Ephesus never sells out, so you can always buy at the gate.
What to bring: Sturdy non-slip shoes (essential on polished marble), 1.5-2 liters of water per person, sunscreen and a hat. There's almost no shade and minimal food/water available inside the site.
Food inside the site: One small cafe near the Great Theatre area. No other food vendors. Bring snacks if you're spending more than 2 hours.
Restrooms: Available at both gates (paid at Upper Gate, EUR 0.50) and at the mid-site cafe near the Great Theatre.
No re-entry. Once you exit, you cannot re-enter on the same ticket.
