Getting to Ephesus
Located near Selçuk, Turkey — easily accessible from Kuşadası cruise port and Izmir
Last updated:
From Kuşadası Cruise Port
Most cruise ship passengers arrive at Kuşadası port, the closest major port to Ephesus. Ships dock right in town — you can walk directly off the ship into the city center.
- •Taxi from the port: approximately €30–60 one way (€60–120 round trip with waiting). Negotiate a fixed price before getting in — standard arrangement is drop at Upper Gate, wait 2–3 hours, pickup at Lower Gate
- •Dolmuş (shared minibus): no direct route — requires 2–3 transfers via Selçuk, ~€3–4 per person, 50–60 min each way
- •Shore excursion tours: €85–135/person including entrance, guide, and transport
- •Many cruise lines offer organized shuttle services (more expensive but the ship will wait if the tour runs late)
From Izmir
Izmir's Adnan Menderes Airport is the nearest major airport. You can reach Ephesus by TCDD commuter train, rental car, or organized transfer.
- •TCDD commuter train from Basmane station to Selçuk: ~1.5 hours, 100–120 TL (~€2.50–3). 8–9 daily departures. Book at ebilet.tcddtasimacilik.gov.tr
- •Direct train from Izmir Airport (ADB): ~1 hour, ~90 TL (~€2). The airport has its own train station on the first floor
- •Drive via the O-31/E87 highway: about 50 minutes to 1 hour
- •Private transfer from airport: €40–60, 45–50 minutes
From Selçuk Town
The town of Selçuk is the closest settlement to Ephesus. The archaeological site entrance is about 3.5 km from the town center. Note: the Selçuk bus terminal relocated in early 2025 — do not rely on Google Maps for the old location.
- •Taxi: 200–300 TL (~€5–8) to the Upper Gate, available at the town square. Worth it for the downhill walk through the site
- •Walk: a 30–40-minute stroll, unshaded — not recommended in summer. You'll pass the Temple of Artemis along the way
- •Dolmuş (shared minibus): ~90 TL (~€2), every 20 min in summer / 30 min in winter — goes to the Lower Gate
By Car
Ephesus has parking areas near both the upper and lower entrances to the archaeological site. We strongly recommend entering at the Upper Gate and walking downhill to the Lower Gate — all guides recommend this direction.
- •Lower Gate parking: 150 TL (~€3). Larger lot with restrooms, ATM, and cafes. Fills quickly between 9:00–11:00 AM in peak season
- •Upper Gate parking: ~200 TL (~€4). Smaller lot, about 2 km walk from the ticket window
- •Recommended self-drive strategy: Park at the Lower Gate, taxi to the Upper Gate, walk downhill through the site back to your car
- •Credit cards accepted at both parking areas
