PRICING
Tickets & Pricing
The Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism sets all Ephesus ticket prices in euros — general admission is EUR 40 per person. Despite the EUR pricing, euro cash is NOT accepted at ticket offices. You must pay in Turkish Lira (cash) or by credit card (Visa/Mastercard), with the Central Bank’s daily exchange rate determining the TRY conversion.

PACKING LIST
What to Bring & Wear
Footwear (Critical)
- •Sturdy, non-slip, closed-toe shoes are essential. Ephesus’s ancient marble streets — traversed by over 2.5 million visitors annually — are polished smooth and genuinely slippery.
- •No heels, no flip-flops.
Sun Protection
- •Hat or cap — almost zero shade inside the site.
- •Sunscreen (SPF 30+) — reapply frequently, as the white marble is highly reflective.
- •Sunglasses — marble glare is intense.
Essentials
- •Water: 1.5–2 liters per person. Almost no water available inside the site.
- •Snacks — no food vendors inside (one mid-site cafe near the Great Theatre).
- •Cash (TRY) — for taxis, small shops, tips, and paid restrooms at the Upper Gate (EUR 0.50).
- •Passport — required for children under 8 (free entry).
Clothing
- •Lightweight, breathable clothing. No dress code at Ephesus itself — shorts and tank tops are fine.
- •Cover shoulders and knees only if also visiting Isa Bey Mosque or the House of the Virgin Mary.
ACCESSIBILITY
Accessibility
- •Ephesus is only partially accessible. The main path from Upper to Lower Gate runs approximately 1.3–2.4 km, mostly downhill over a mix of marble slabs, gravel, and modern cobblestones.
- •Roughly 75% of the main route is navigable via gravel paths and wood-rail walkways.
- •Wheelchair users need 1–2 companions — independent navigation is not feasible due to uneven ancient surfaces.
- •The steep gradient between Hercules Gate and the Theatre is the most challenging section.
- •Accessible restrooms are available at both gates.
- •The Terrace Houses are NOT accessible (all stairs, one-way route via glass staircases).
- •Enter at the Upper Gate for the easier downhill route.
- •The Ephesus Experience Museum (lower gate) is fully accessible.
TIMING
Best Time to Visit
| Season | Temp | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr–May) | 15–25°C | Moderate | Best — mild weather, manageable crowds |
| Early Summer (Jun) | 25–32°C | High | Good if you arrive early morning |
| Peak Summer (Jul–Aug) | 28–38°C+ | Very high | Extremely hot, cruise ship peak season |
| Autumn (Sep–Oct) | 20–30°C | Moderate | Best — warm, fewer crowds |
| Winter (Nov–Mar) | 5–15°C | Low | Cool, occasional rain, shorter hours, very few tourists |
Experienced guides warn that the white marble reflects sunlight, making the felt temperature 4–5°C higher than the ambient air. Summer temperatures at the site can reach 37–43°C.
Best Time of Day
- •Arrive at the 8:00 AM opening for the quietest experience — this gives you 1–2 hours before tour buses arrive.
- •After 3:30 PM is the next-best window — cruise groups are departing, and the light softens for photography.
- •Avoid 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM if possible — this is when cruise ship tour groups flood the site, especially during peak season (July–August).
STRATEGY
The Two-Gate Strategy
Enter at the Upper (south/Magnesia) Gate and walk downhill to the Lower (north/Harbour) Gate. This top-down route is universally recommended by guidebooks including Lonely Planet and Rough Guides, as well as experienced local guides.
Upper Gate (Magnesia)
- Elevation
- Higher
- Facilities
- Smaller, fewer shops, paid restrooms (EUR 0.50)
- Dolmus Access
- No dolmus access
Lower Gate (Harbour)
- Elevation
- Lower
- Facilities
- Larger, free restrooms, ATM, cafes, Experience Museum
- Dolmus Access
- Yes — dolmus from Selcuk stops here
- •The walk is 1.5–2.4 km downhill through the ruins.
- •A common arrangement: taxi drops at Upper Gate, picks up at Lower Gate. Confirm in advance.
- •Dolmus service only reaches the Lower Gate. To start at the Upper Gate, take a taxi from Selcuk (200–300 TRY, about 5 minutes).
ON SITE
Facilities & Services
- •Restrooms at both entrance gates. Paid restrooms at Upper Gate (EUR 0.50).
- •One mid-site cafe and restroom near the Great Theatre. Plan for 1.5–2 hours without facilities once deep inside the ruins.
- •Gift shops at both entrances.
- •Audio guide rental available at entrance ticket offices (approximately 450 TRY as of late 2025; TRY prices change frequently due to inflation).
- •Smartphone audio guide apps: Clio Muse Tours and Discover Ephesus (works offline), typically EUR 5–15.
- •No luggage storage at Ephesus. Leave bags at your hotel or use Radical Storage near the Archaeological Museum (approximately EUR 5/day).
